The PEI Experience – Part 1

I have to tell you that the weather on Prince Edward Island in May fell somewhere short of my hopes.  I was picturing blossoming apple trees and fields of wildflowers – there were definite signs that of impending bloominess, but mostly it was gray, wet and cold…

I imagine the locals must’ve thought us a little odd, traipsing around PEI a full two weeks before the official start of the season.  But there was a certain charm to being there before the masses descended.  We had a chance to wander the beaches and find our pick of lovely bounty from the sea…

There were exhilarating chats with the locals…

and even an encounter with some lobster-men (sadly, no lobster was consumed :( )…

Layers, LOTS of hot tea and a roaring fire helped loads!!

————————

Weather aside, the place itself was amazing… our lovely house (The Highlands) rivaled Green Gables for its cozy charm…

the windows were filled with colored glass…

the walls covered in faded wallpaper…

there were tumble-down buildings with secrets to share…

and tattered treasures tucked away in every corner…

And, as many of these trips as I’ve taken now, I’m still surprised and delighted to find like-minded women to share the experience with.  While almost everyone besides me was from Canada or the east coast, I felt that familiar kinship that I always find at these creative gatherings – one that seems to transcend age or geography or life circumstance… I realize, as Anne herself might have said, “Kindred spirits are not so scarce as I used to think.”

  1. Kelley,

Oh it looks lovely there even if it was not warm. I am looking forward to hearing more about this trip.

  2. Kim Mailhot says:

The East Coast has had that kind of spring, Miss Kelley, and I can only image how raw it can be right on the sea. I am so excited to hear more about your experiences.
    Happy landings…

I am so anxious to hear more about your PEI experience! Yes it is true, the weather for us up here in the northeast has been raw and mizzly for the entire spring season but we cannot complain when we here of such devastation in the midwest from the tornados- I do hope you and you loved ones will remain safe and that no more storms will harm anyone ever again.
Having spent a bit of time up on PEI in years past (even long “before the bridge” as they are fond of saying up there), I can attest that it is indeed a magical place no matter what the weather. ‘Anne of Green Gables’ has been a part of my life forever, and I still have my grandmother’s first edition (c. 1908) given to her when she was 8yrs. old that very same year. It is one of my most treasured possessions.
Looking forward to hearing more of your adventures!

Wishing i could have been there but loving living vicariously through your words and images.

    • Kelley says:

Part of the reason I took this trip was because I read about your experience at Sabrina’s Ace Camp last year.

Thank you so much for inspiring me to take this leap!!

      hugs, Kelley
